MEGA BLOKS for 1-year-olds: the best first sets
A first birthday is when most children meet their first block. Here is what a one-year-old actually does with MEGA BLOKS, and which sets suit that stage.

What building looks like at twelve months
Forget towers for now. A one-year-old's favourite move is taking things apart, and that is exactly where block play begins. They pull two blocks away from each other, drop one into the bag, fish it out again and hand it to you. Stacking comes next, usually two or three blocks high before the whole thing is pushed over with great satisfaction.
Our First Builders blocks are sized for that stage. They are big enough to hold in one fist, the studs are wide and forgiving, and the fit is firm without being stubborn, so a small hand can separate them without help.
Where to start
The Big Building Bag is the set most families buy first, and for good reason: eighty blocks, bright colours, and a drawstring bag that turns tidy-up into a game of its own. It comes in blue and pink with the same blocks inside.
If your toddler is already cruising along the furniture, a Build 'n Learn Table lets them build standing up. For a child who would rather push than stack, the small John Deere Lil' Tractor or the Block Scooping Wagon gives the blocks somewhere to go.
What to leave for later
The 3-in-1 picture builds are labelled 3+ because they ask a child to follow steps, which is a different skill from stacking. Our small-piece MEGA collector sets are for adults and older fans only and should stay out of a toddler's reach.
| Set | Why it suits a 1-year-old |
|---|---|
| Big Building Bag, 80 blocks | Open-ended pile, easy grip, storage bag included |
| Deluxe Building Bag, 150 blocks | Same blocks, enough for siblings to share |
| Build 'n Learn Table | Building at standing height for new cruisers |
| John Deere Lil' Tractor | Five blocks and a tractor, small enough for trips |
| ABC Learning Train | Rolls along the floor, letters for later |
Quick answers
Can a 12-month-old play with MEGA BLOKS?
Yes. The First Builders range is labelled 1+, and the blocks are designed for children who are just learning to grip, press and pull apart.
How many blocks does a 1-year-old need?
Eighty is plenty. At this age a child plays with a handful at a time, and a smaller pile is easier to tidy away.
Should I wait until they can stack?
No. Pulling blocks apart and dropping them into a bag is the first stage of block play, and stacking grows out of it.
